Swimming Pool Heaters - Heat Pumps and Gas Heaters for Every Pool
This collection covers every pool heater we carry - electric heat pumps and gas heaters for above-ground pools, in-ground pools, and spas. Heat pumps use electricity to pull heat from the air and are the most efficient choice for pools used regularly in warm climates. Gas heaters burn propane or natural gas for immediate full-output heating at any air temperature, making them the right choice for fast heat-up, cold climates, or pools that sit unused for long stretches. Use the table below to find the right fit, or use the quiz to get a recommendation based on your specific setup.

Heat pumps require a 220-240V circuit (smaller FibroPool models: 110-120V). No gas line needed. Gas heaters require a propane tank or natural gas line plus a 120/240V circuit. Heat/Cool units both heat and chill. Heat Only costs less upfront. Inverter models run quieter and use less electricity. Cold-climate buyers should size up one tier on heat pumps. Spa mode units can heat to 104°F for spa/hot tub use.

Pool Heater FAQs
What is the difference between a pool heat pump and a gas heater?
A heat pump uses electricity to extract heat from the surrounding air and transfer it into the pool water. It does not generate heat - it moves it - which is why operating costs are so much lower than gas. The tradeoff is recovery speed and cold-weather performance. A gas heater burns propane or natural gas to generate heat directly, which works at any air temperature and heats the pool faster from cold. For most pools used regularly in warm climates, a heat pump is the better long-term value. For fast heat-up, cold climates, or pools used occasionally, gas is the right tool.
What size pool heater do I need?
Use the table above as a starting point based on your pool volume. For heat pumps, sizing is about temperature maintenance - match the BTU range to your pool size and climate. In colder climates, size up one tier. For gas heaters, sizing is about recovery speed - a bigger unit heats your pool faster. If you are unsure, call us at 800-809-3741 or use the quiz at the top of this page.
Why do some higher-BTU heat pumps cover a smaller pool than lower-BTU models?
BTU output is only one part of the sizing equation for a heat pump. Manufacturers also factor in the efficiency of the heat exchanger design, the compressor type, and the operating conditions each unit is rated for. An inverter heat pump with 115,000 BTUs may be rated for a smaller pool than you would expect because the manufacturer has tested and rated it conservatively based on real-world conditions - accounting for heat loss, overnight temperature drop, and sustained heating demand over a full season. A standard (non-inverter) unit with a similar BTU rating may carry a higher pool size rating because it runs at full capacity continuously, while the inverter model modulates down. This is not a flaw - inverter units are quieter, more energy-efficient, and have a longer lifespan precisely because they do not run flat-out. If your pool sits at the boundary between two models, sizing up is always the safer call, particularly in climates where nighttime temperatures fall below 60 degrees.
Can a pool heater also cool the pool?
Most heat pump models in this collection include cooling capability, letting you lower pool temperature in summer. This is particularly useful in Florida, Texas, and Arizona where water temperatures can reach the low 90s in August. Gas heaters cannot cool the pool.
Does a pool heater need a gas line?
Only if you buy a gas heater. All heat pump models in this collection run on electricity only - no gas line required. Gas heaters require either a natural gas supply line or a propane tank, plus a small electrical connection for the control system.
Do you offer installation?
Yes. Visit our installation support page for details on connecting with a licensed installer in your area. Gas heater installation requires a licensed contractor in most jurisdictions.
