Hayward Pool Filter Types: Sand, Cartridge, and D.E.

Sand filters trap debris in a bed of #20 silica sand and clean through backwashing. They filter to 20-40 microns, require no media replacement for 3-5 years, and have the lowest ongoing cost of any filter type. The right choice for pool owners who want simple, low-maintenance filtration.

Cartridge filters use a pleated polyester element to capture particles to 10-15 microns without backwashing or a multiport valve. Cleaning is done by removing and rinsing the cartridge with a garden hose. No water is wasted during routine maintenance, and the simpler plumbing makes them a natural fit for pools where a backwash drain line is impractical.

D.E. filters provide the finest residential pool filtration available, capturing particles down to 2 microns using diatomaceous earth powder as the filter media. The Hayward Perflex line uses a patented Flex-Tube design that cleans without backwashing through a bump handle, reusing the D.E. charge rather than flushing it. D.E. filtration is the choice when water clarity is the top priority.

Hayward StarClear Cartridge Filters

Single-element cartridge filters for above-ground pools, smaller in-ground pools, and spas. 50 sq ft (W3C500) and 120 sq ft (W3C12002) models. No backwash valve required.

Hayward SwimClear Cartridge Filters

High-capacity cartridge filters for larger in-ground pools. Single-element and four-element models from 150 sq ft to 525 sq ft. Industry-leading low head loss and EasyLok ring access.

Hayward ProGrid D.E. Filters

Vertical grid D.E. filters for in-ground pools. 36, 48, and 60 sq ft models. 5-micron filtration, one-piece flange clamp access, NSF/ANSI/CAN 50 certified. No backwash valve included; compatible valves sold separately.

Hayward Perflex D.E. Filters

Extended-cycle D.E. filters with patented Flex-Tube bump-to-clean design. 2-micron filtration without backwashing or grid teardown. In-ground (27 and 40 sq ft) and above-ground (20 and 25 sq ft) models, including pump system bundles.
