Backwash when pressure rises 8 to 10 PSI above the clean baseline. Set the valve to Backwash, run the pump until the sight glass clears, then Rinse for 15 to 30 seconds before returning to Filter. Use the sight glass rather than a fixed timer.
Sand typically lasts 3 to 5 years. Signs it needs replacing: persistent cloudiness after correct backwashing, fine sand at return fittings, or very short intervals between backwash cycles.
