The Hayward SwimClear W3C150S is a 150 sq ft single-element cartridge pool filter for smaller and mid-size in-ground pools, spas, and water features. EasyLok ring design, comfort grip handles, recessed pressure gauge, and 2" x 2.5" union connections. No backwash required.

Hayward SwimClear W3C150S 150 Sq Ft Single-Element Cartridge Pool Filter

The Hayward SwimClear W3C150S is a 150 sq ft single-element cartridge pool filter designed for smaller and mid-size residential in-ground pools, spas, and water features. It captures particles down to 10-15 microns without backwashing, media recharging, or a multiport valve. The industry-leading low head loss allows the pump to run at a lower speed or for less time compared to higher-resistance filter designs, contributing to meaningful energy savings over a season.

The W3C150S is Hayward's newest single-element SwimClear design. The EasyLok ring gives single-turn access to the cartridge, ergonomic comfort grip handles allow the head assembly to be placed upside down on the pool pad without contaminating the seal, and the lowest-lift-height design in its class makes cartridge removal and reinstallation easier than previous generation single-element filters.

Note on the W3C150S vs. the older C150S: The W3C150S is a newer, updated design with a lower design flow rate (56 GPM), a GFR glass-filled resin tank, 2" x 2.5" union connections, and EasyLok ring access. If you are replacing an older dealer-line C150S or C150SX, verify the connection sizes and footprint match your existing plumbing before ordering.

Hayward SwimClear W3C150S Single-Element Cartridge Filter Key Features

  • 150 sq ft single-element cartridge - Captures more dirt per cleaning cycle than smaller-element designs, extending the interval between required cleanings for pools and spas at this volume range.
  • Industry-leading low head loss - Hydraulic efficiency allows the pump to operate at lower speeds or shorter run times to achieve the same turnover, reducing energy costs compared to higher-resistance filter designs.
  • EasyLok ring design - Single-turn access to all internal components. No tools required to open the filter housing or remove the cartridge.
  • Comfort grip handles - Multiple ergonomic handling locations allow the head assembly to be set upside down on the pool pad during cartridge service, protecting the seal from contamination.
  • Lowest lift height in class - Reduced height between the filter body and the cartridge element simplifies removal and reinstallation during routine cleaning.
  • Recessed pressure gauge and manual air relief - Both are integrated into the head assembly in a protected, recessed position for easy servicing.
  • 2" x 2.5" union connections - Fast installation and servicing without cutting plumbing. Compatible with standard in-ground pool plumbing.
  • GFR glass-filled resin tank - Durable construction for continuous outdoor exposure and pool water chemical contact.
  • No backwash required - Cleaning requires only cartridge removal and a garden hose rinse. No multiport valve, no drain line, no water discharge during routine maintenance.

Pool size coverage depends on pump sizing, turnover rate targets, and site conditions. The 56 GPM design flow rate is matched to the pump output appropriate for smaller and mid-size pools. Consult a pool equipment professional for system design guidance.

Cleaning the Hayward SwimClear W3C150S Cartridge Filter

Turn off the pump and open the manual air relief valve to release tank pressure before opening the lid. Once the tank is depressurized, use the EasyLok ring for single-turn access to the cartridge. The comfort grip handles allow you to lift the head assembly and set it upside down on the pool pad, protecting the lid seal from debris while you work on the cartridge.

Rinse the CX150XRE cartridge from top to bottom using a garden hose with a spray nozzle, working between each pleat fold. Continue until the runoff is clear. Do not use a pressure washer at any setting; high-pressure spray permanently compresses the pleat fibers. Reinstall the cartridge, close the EasyLok ring, open the air relief valve, and restart the pump. Note the pressure when the system is running cleanly; this is the baseline for future cleaning decisions. A rise of 8 to 10 PSI above that baseline signals cleaning is due.

Deep Cleaning and Cartridge Replacement

Routine rinsing removes surface debris but not the oils, sunscreen residue, and mineral scale that embed in the pleat fibers over a season. Soaking the CX150XRE overnight in a pool cartridge cleaning solution at season opening and midpoint clears those deposits and restores lower operating pressure. Replace the cartridge when pressure does not return to baseline after a full clean-and-soak cycle, when the pleats show visible damage, or when the end caps crack.

Hayward W3C150S SwimClear Single-Element Cartridge Filter Frequently Asked Questions

What replacement cartridge does the W3C150S use?

The W3C150S uses the Hayward CX150XRE replacement cartridge element. Using the OEM CX150XRE ensures correct end cap seating against the internal manifold and that the full 150 sq ft of rated filter area is active and properly sealed.

How does the W3C150S differ from the older C150S?

The W3C150S is a newer design with a lower design flow rate (56 GPM vs. 150 GPM on the older dealer-line C150S), a GFR glass-filled resin tank, 2" x 2.5" union connections (vs. 2" NPT on the older model), EasyLok ring access, and comfort grip handles. The W3C150S is positioned for smaller and mid-size pools, spas, and water features, while the older C150S was rated for larger in-ground pools. If you are replacing an existing C150S, verify connection sizes and footprint before ordering.

Does the W3C150S require any tools for cartridge removal?

No. The EasyLok ring design provides single-turn access to all internal components without tools. The only step required before opening is turning off the pump and releasing tank pressure through the air relief valve. Never open the lid while the filter is pressurized.

Is the W3C150S compatible with saltwater pool systems?

Yes. The GFR glass-filled resin tank and CX150XRE cartridge are compatible with saltwater pool systems. Confirm that all other components in the circulation loop are also rated for saltwater use before completing the installation.

What does "low head loss" mean and why does it matter?

Head loss is the resistance the filter adds to the circulation system. A filter with lower head loss allows the pump to achieve the required flow rate at a lower speed or for a shorter run time, which reduces electricity consumption. The W3C150S's hydraulic design minimizes resistance so variable-speed pumps can run efficiently at lower speeds while still achieving proper pool turnover.
