Hayward PerFlex W3EC50AC Extended-Cycle D.E. Pool Filter
The PerFlex W3EC50AC delivers 2-micron D.E. filtration without the maintenance of a conventional grid D.E. filter. No backwash valve, no drain line, no fresh D.E. needed after each cleaning. When pressure rises 10 to 12 PSI above the clean baseline, stop the pump and stroke the bump handle 8 times. The Flex-Tubes flex and shed the loaded D.E. cake; dirty and clean D.E. mix together and recoat the tube surfaces. Restart the pump. In most cases pressure returns near baseline and filtration continues without adding any fresh powder. A full 5 lb recharge is only needed when bumping no longer restores acceptable pressure after the sump is drained.

Hayward PerFlex W3EC50AC D.E. Pool Filter Frequently Asked Questions
How do I clean this filter?
When operating pressure rises 10 to 12 PSI above the clean starting pressure, stop the pump and stroke the bump handle 8 times (down slowly, up briskly). The Flex-Tubes flex and shed the loaded D.E., which redistributes and recoats the tube surfaces. Restart the pump. No backwash, no fresh D.E., no disassembly needed. When bumping alone stops restoring pressure, drain the sump at the base of the filter. A full D.E. recharge is only required when both bumping and draining no longer restore acceptable pressure.
Does D.E. powder come with this filter?
No. You need 5 lbs of pool-grade diatomaceous earth, purchased separately. Pre-mix the powder into a slurry with water in a bucket, then add it through the filter inlet with the pump running. Do not use food-grade, pest-control, or industrial D.E. products.
Is this filter for above ground or in-ground pools?
Primarily above ground pools. Hayward lists the W3EC50AC for above ground and small in-ground pool applications. For larger in-ground pools with a higher-output pump, the W3EC65A (27 sq ft, 67 GPM) is the more appropriate choice.
D.E. is appearing in my pool. What does that mean?
D.E. in the pool through the return fittings means one or more Flex-Tube elements has a hole or seam failure. Stop the pump immediately, open the filter housing using the clamp, and inspect each tube individually. Replace any tube with a visible breach before restarting.
Is this a direct replacement for the EC50AC?
Yes. W3EC50AC is the direct replacement for EC50AC with the same specifications and Flex-Tube design.
