Hayward AstroLite 500W Incandescent Pool Light: 100-Foot Cord with Thermoplastic Trim for Extended Conduit Runs

The 100-foot cord on this AstroLite is the right specification when the conduit route from the light niche to the junction box measures more than 50 feet. The measurement that matters is the routed conduit distance along the pool wall, under coping, across the deck, and out to the equipment area, not a straight-line estimate. Any cord beyond the conduit run is coiled inside the niche behind the fixture and stored there permanently, available to pull the fixture out to the pool deck during future service without disconnecting at the junction box. The thermoplastic trim is non-conductive glass-filled polypropylene, appropriate for niches where the bonding system does not use the trim ring as a connection point.

Thermoplastic Trim vs. Stainless Steel Trim: Which Is Right for Your Niche

Thermoplastic trim is the correct choice when the existing niche uses a non-metal trim ring or when the pool's bonding system does not route through the trim. It does not require a bonding conductor connection at the trim ring, does not corrode, and is typically lower cost than stainless. Stainless steel trim is appropriate when the niche uses a metal trim ring connected to the bonding grid, when the design specifies metal for aesthetic continuity, or in saltwater or coastal environments. If uncertain about bonding requirements for your specific niche, confirm with the installing licensed electrician before ordering.

Hayward AstroLite 500W Thermoplastic Trim 100-Foot Cord Frequently Asked Questions

Does the thermoplastic trim require a bonding conductor connection?

No. Thermoplastic is non-conductive and does not participate in the pool's equipotential bonding system. If bonding at the light niche is required, that connection is made through the niche housing, fixture body, or separately routed conductors. The installing licensed electrician confirms bonding requirements and ensures NEC Article 680 compliance.

How do I measure whether I need the 100-foot cord?

Measure the routed conduit distance from the niche to the junction box, not a straight-line estimate across the pool or deck. The most reliable method is pulling a measuring tape through the existing conduit. For borderline-length runs, the 100-foot cord is the safer choice: excess cord stores inside the niche and has no effect on performance, while a cord that falls short cannot be extended without violating NEC requirements.

What is the Automatic Thermal Switch (ATS)?

The ATS is a safety feature that cuts power to the fixture if it overheats, typically due to operating out of water. Models with the "L" suffix in the SKU include it as standard. It resets automatically once the fixture cools.

Should I upgrade to an LED pool light instead of a like-for-like AstroLite replacement?

If energy savings and eliminating bulb replacement are priorities, an LED pool light that fits the same niche at 120V is worth considering. It uses significantly less wattage, does not require periodic bulb replacement for the LED's rated service life, and adds color-changing capability. The AstroLite remains the right choice when upfront cost, incandescent light quality preference, or niche compatibility uncertainty favor a direct replacement.

Is the niche included with this fixture?

No. The AstroLite fixture is sold without the niche. If the existing niche is being reused, confirm that its dimensions and trim ring are compatible with this fixture before ordering. If a new niche is needed, Hayward's Duraniche is designed to pair with the AstroLite series.
