The Hayward PowerFlo Matrix is a high-efficiency above-ground pool pump built for sand, cartridge, and D.E. filter setups. Three models cover 1 HP and 1.5 HP outputs in single-speed and 2-speed configurations. All share the same core design: push-button horizontal/vertical discharge conversion, industrial-size strainer basket, quick-disconnect intake and discharge connections, stainless steel shaft, and an integrated automatic thermal overload protector.

The push-button discharge orientation is one of the PowerFlo Matrix's most practical features — converting between vertical and horizontal discharge with a single press lets the pump fit a wider range of equipment pad layouts without additional fittings or pipe modifications. The quick-connect intake and discharge ports and C-Clip strainer housing release allow the pump to be disconnected and reconnected quickly for seasonal storage or service.
The industrial-size strainer basket collects more debris between cleanings than standard above-ground pump baskets, and the clear cover lets you check fill level without removing the lid. The high-flow Noryl impeller has wide openings to resist clogging from leaves and debris.
Choosing Between the 1 HP, 1.5 HP, and 1.5 HP 2-Speed Models
The 1 HP model suits smaller above-ground pools and filter setups where the pump's output at actual system head stays within the filter's rated flow ceiling. The 1.5 HP single-speed delivers more head and flow for larger pools or longer plumbing runs. The 1.5 HP 2-speed adds a low-speed setting for extended filtration cycles at significantly reduced energy consumption — the low speed runs the pump at roughly one-quarter the electricity of high speed, which can substantially reduce operating costs over a full season when the pool only needs circulation rather than peak filtration output.
